My data protection promise
- ✓ No trackers or cookies other than technically necessary ones
- ✓ No advertising
- ✓ No sharing of personal data with third parties
- ✓ Only what is really needed is stored
What data is stored?
Account data
Email address (for login and password reset), name (optional), role (parent or teacher).
Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (DSGVO)).
Child profiles
First name, year, chosen avatar, statistics (stars, completed dictations).
Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Child profiles are only ever created by parents or teachers – never by children themselves.
A child profile can be looked after jointly by several parents or caregivers (e.g. blended families). Additional parents are invited by an existing parent with a 6-digit code and then see the same child data as the original parent.
Device sign-in for children (pairing)
Parents can connect a child profile to the child’s device (e.g. their own tablet or a family tablet), so that the child can practise without the parent’s login. This uses a 6-digit code (or QR code, valid for 2 minutes) and, after a successful sign-in, a technical session cookie (pippo_kid_session).
Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Parents can revoke individual device sign-ins at any time in the parents’ area. Children can sign out of their device themselves.
Dictation results
Which dictation was practised, how many mistakes were made, how many stars were earned, the date of practice, and the misspelt words of each attempt (for targeted repetition).
Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Teachers
Class names, invitation codes, the class’s dictations.
Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Feedback & reports
Email, message and category. For signed-in users, the user ID is also linked.
Legal basis: legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) – improving the service and handling enquiries.
How long is data stored?
Your data is stored for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, all related data (profiles, results, feedback) is deleted as well.
Feedback messages not linked to an account are deleted after 12 months at the latest.
How is your data protected?
All data is sent encrypted via HTTPS and stored in a secure database (Supabase).
By default, only you can see your child profiles and their results. If you invite other parents or caregivers, they can also see the data of the children shared with them (shared care). Teachers only see the data of children in their classes.
Passwords are never stored in plain text, but are protected with modern encryption methods.
Cookies
Pippo uses only technically necessary cookies: for signing in (session cookie), to recognise active sessions (activity cookie, valid for 60 seconds) and, if you switch the language, for the language you chose. Without these cookies, login or correct session management would not be possible.
On devices where a child is signed in directly, technical pairing cookies (pippo_kid_session and pippo_device_pairings) are also used. They keep the child’s session going so that the child can practise without the parent’s login. These are not tracking cookies either.
If you switch the language (on the website, on a shared dictation or when choosing a child), Pippo remembers your choice in a technical cookie (pippo_ui_locale). This way, the sign-in page, shared links and the child selection also appear in that language. The cookie only contains the language code (e.g. “de”), no identifier, and is deleted when you close your browser. The legal basis is § 165(3) TKG 2021 (strictly necessary for the language you chose); to the extent the code is personal data at all, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in showing the website in your language).
There are no tracking cookies, no advertising cookies and no third-party cookies. That is why no cookie banner is needed (Art. 5(3) ePrivacy Directive, § 165(3) TKG 2021 – Telekommunikationsgesetz, Austrian Telecommunications Act).
Services Pippo uses
Vercel (hosting)
pippo.app is hosted by Vercel. The server functions (backend) run in Frankfurt (fra1), static files are delivered via the global edge network. For technical reasons, Vercel creates server logs (IP address, timestamp, URL requested) for a maximum of 30 days. No web analytics service is active – neither Vercel Analytics nor Google Analytics nor any similar tracker.
Legal basis: legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Supabase (database & auth)
Pippo uses Supabase for authentication and data storage. When the project was set up, the region “Europe” was chosen; Supabase automatically assigned the project to the sub-region London (UK). Thanks to the EU adequacy decision, a transfer to the United Kingdom is legally treated the same as a transfer within the EU.
More information: Privacy policy · GDPR information
Resend (sending emails)
To send emails (e.g. login links, password reset), Pippo uses Resend. Only your email address is passed on to Resend – no other personal data.
Servers: EU (Ireland). Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Google OAuth (login)
If you sign in with Google, your name and email address are passed on from Google to Supabase. No other Google data is requested or stored. I never receive or store your Google password.
Legal basis: consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) – by clicking “Sign in with Google”.
Speech output (Azure Speech)
Pippo reads dictation sentences aloud using speech synthesis. For this, Azure Speech by Microsoft is used. Only the dictation text is sent – no names, emails or child profiles.
Servers: EU (West Europe). Legal basis: performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Error monitoring (Sentry)
To keep Pippo running reliably, technical errors are recorded automatically via Sentry. Only technical data is sent (error message, browser type, page URL) – no names, no emails, no child profiles, no dictation content. Storage period: 90 days.
Servers: USA. Legal basis: legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) – fixing technical errors and stability.
AI sentence generation (OpenRouter)
The optional “spelling words” feature uses an AI language model via OpenRouter to create age-appropriate dictation sentences from the words entered. Only the words entered, the additional instruction and the chosen settings (year, language, difficulty, number and length of the sentences) are sent – no personal data.
Servers: USA. Legal basis: legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) – no personal data is sent.
Use at school
For use at school, pippo.app is deliberately built so that responsibility for pupils’ data stays with the parents. This is how it works:
- Teachers create a class and receive a class code (e.g.
TIGER-42). - Teachers cannot create pupil accounts directly.
- Parents receive the code, create the child profile in their own account and join the class themselves.
- The teacher then sees first name, year and learning progress – but not the email address, surname or date of birth.
In this standard set-up, the parents are the controllers under data protection law, and pippo.app processes the data on their behalf. A data processing agreement with the school is not required for this.
If a school nevertheless wants to use pippo.app formally as a central school tool (with the head teacher as controller under § 4(1) BilDokG 2020 – Bildungsdokumentationsgesetz, Austrian Education Documentation Act), pippo.app acts in this set-up as a processor under Art. 28 GDPR. In this case, the data processing agreement (Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag, AVV) prescribed by the Bundesministerium für Bildung (BMB, Austrian Federal Ministry of Education) can be requested at wuff@pippo.app – pippo.app undertakes to comply with it.
Transfer of data to third countries
The core services run on servers within the EU or in the UK: hosting (Vercel) in Frankfurt, speech output (Azure) in Western Europe, email (Resend) in Ireland, database (Supabase) in London. Thanks to the EU adequacy decision, a transfer to the UK is treated the same as a transfer within the EU.
Only the AI sentence generation via OpenRouter may use servers in the USA. However, no personal data is sent (only words, instruction and settings such as year, language and difficulty). Google OAuth transfers data to Google (USA) on the basis of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
